highway that connects Robbinsville North Carolina and
Tellico Plains, in Southwest Tennessee. For over 15
miles in North Carolina, and 21 miles in Tennessee the
Cherohala Skyway takes motorists and cycle enthusiasts
through winding twists and turns and over 5,400 foot
mountains. The road goes through parts of both the
Cherokee National Forest and the Nantahala National
Forest, which is where its name, “Cherohala” comes from.
Known as one of the most scenic byways in North
Carolina, the
Cherohala Skyway was completed in 1996
after over fifty years of complicated planning. After
thirty two years of construction the highway opened and
is known as North Carolina’s most expensive highway
project ever, costing more than 100,000,000 dollars over
the course of the construction.
The
Cherohala Skyway begins at Santeetlah Gap in North
Carolina and quickly goes to Santeetlah overlook at mile
marker 11 which is the highest overlook on the entire
skyway at 5,390 feet. After twisting and turning through
many miles of winding roads, the skyway quickly begins
to descend into the Tellico River Basin as one gets
close to Tellico Plains, TN. Many visitors to the region
and vacationers in Robbinsville claim that the
Cherohala’s panoramic views far surpass any view that
one can see from the Blue Ridge Parkway and motorcycle
clubs and sports car circles have long considered the
Cherohala Skyway one of the best driving highways in the
Southeast!

the most scenic regions of the mountains. Our cool,
